Twig:  Thin bark divided by shallow fissures, into broad ridges of dark brown color

 

Bark:  Brown to gray, smooth, becoming rough and furrowed into scaly ridges

 

Form:  Pyramidal to upright oval when young, broad round with age, drooping lower branches

 

Discussion:

 

Uses:  Used to make shingles

 

Origin:  North America native

 

Distribution:  Ohio valley north toward Michigan and Wisconsin and west to Iowa
