Tree Descriptions:

Shagbark_Hickory_Tree Name:

Leaf:         Type:

3.    Margin: Coarsely Toothed
4.    Base: Round
    Arrangement: Compound Opposite

Flower: Yes         
   Description: Male has catkins, hanging in 3’s, and 2-3inches long. Female flower is short with clusters at the end. Both appear April through June. No Petals.

Fruit: Yes
        Description: Nut egg shaped and 2 inches across.

Twig: Very stout, reddish brown can be smooth or hairy.

Shagbark_Hickory_Bark Bark: Light gray color separating into long narrow, curved tip, loosely attach to middle.

Form: The tree is medium size with straight trunk and an open, rounded to oblong crown.

Discussion:

Uses: The wood is used for fuel. And the nuts are eaten by animals and humans.

Origin (Location): Native to Illinois

Distribution: Southern Canada and the Eastern half of the U.S.
