Description: Male has catkins,
hanging in 3’s, and 2-3inches long. Female flower is short with
clusters at the
end. Both appear April through June. No Petals.
Fruit: Yes
Description: Nut egg shaped and 2 inches across.
Twig: Very stout, reddish brown can be smooth or
hairy.
Bark: Light
gray color separating into long narrow, curved tip, loosely attach to
middle.
Form: The tree is medium size with straight
trunk and an open, rounded to oblong crown.
Discussion:
Uses: The wood is used for fuel. And the nuts
are eaten by animals and humans.
Origin (Location): Native to Illinois
Distribution: Southern Canada and the Eastern
half of the U.S.
