7th Grade
St. Mary's Seventh Grade homeroom is supervised by Susan Bassie and Jamie Hartrich.
Please review how the following topics have been prepared for the Seventh Grade school year.
RELIGION
Seventh Grade religion class is taught by Donna Zvonar.
The seventh grade religion program is the first part of a two-year program based on the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
One year they study about creed and prayer.
The next year they study Liturgy and Morality.
Within those units, they study the doctrine of the Catholic Church, Scripture, saints, church history, and the liturgical year.
Students actively plan liturgies and paraliturgies, serve in the local soup kitchen and perform other works of service. The students also prepare for the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation biannually.

LANGUAGE ARTS/READING
Seventh Grade langugage arts/reading classes are taught by Martha Hillmer.
The Seventh Grade language Arts curriculum covers reading comprehension with in-depth focus on key literary devices. Other major components will be grammar and writing instruction.
They will read, learn and write about myths, tales, fables, short stories, and poetry. They will study at least two novels in depth. Students will respond to literature in a variety of ways such as test taking, projects and presentations.
Students will develop their knowledge of grammar with a focus on the parts of speech and the importance of grammar in effective communication.
Students will learn to write in various modes. They will write personal narratives, persuasive essays, letters, descriptive essays and research papers. Through all this writing they will understand the importance of prewriting, editing and revising.

SCIENCE
Seventh Grade science class is taught by Donna Zvonar.
Students will continue to use sciencing skills and simple equipment to explore and solve problems, including those with independent and dependent variables.
They will learn to use and make classification keys and work with live insects as well as write an insect research paper and make an insect collection.
They will learn about seed-bearing plants, and compare and contrast monocots and dicots. They will contribute research to our Tree Website
They will study the basic concepts of light and sound.
Every other year, they will participate in the school science fair including an interview of an expert in the field.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Seventh Grade social studies class is taught by Marta Mason.
The Social Studies program is a two-year world history program.
Students will learn about the five themes of geography:
- location,
- place,
- human environmental interaction,
- movement, and
- region
This will include a study of countries on the seven different continents.
Students will learn about prehistoric people, including the Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons; study ancient Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, and other river valley civilizations.
The students will learn about the Phoenicians, the Hebrews, the Assyrians, the Chaldeans, and the Persian Empires. The students will learn about Africa and the Americas. They will learn about the Greeks, including the Minoans, the Mycenaeans, the City-States of Greece, and their decline.
The students will learn about the Romans, including a study of the beginnings of Rome, their government, important leaders, and why the Roman Empire fell.
They will learn about the Early Middle Ages, including a study of the Germans, the Franks, the Irish, the Anglo-Saxons, and the Vikings.

Art
St. Mary's Art is taught by Carrie Jimenez.
Students will again explore the different areas of art, as well as use the elements of visual art, to be creative and design their own works of art.
Students will be introduced to the lives, techniques, and works of several well-known artists.
They will apply their knowledge of the elements and media used in visual art to critique works of various artists, including their own works. Through critique, students will be able to express how the choice of media in a work of art causes them to feel.

MUSIC
St. Mary's Music is taught by April Myers.
In seventh grade, students learn beginning music theory and notation reading. Music listening is reinforced and critical thinking and analyzing is asked of the students in regards to listening.
Students will be asked to do research on composers and give a report. Time periods will be discussed in a basic form.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
St. Mary's physical education class is taught by Susan Bassie.
The physical education curriculum has three major focus areas:
- physical fitness,
- cooperative learning, and
- sport skills/rules.
Students work on specific skills for each sport, and are responsible for knowing the rules to all the sport units covered. Sportsmanship is practiced daily.
Students do cardiovascular exercise along with a stretching routine daily.
Health is also addressed once a week in the classroom with topics such as:
- nutrition,
- disease prevention,
- anatomy,
- physical fitness,
- conflict resolution, and
- chastity education are addressed.

COMPUTERS/TECHNOLOGY
St. Mary's computers/technology is
taught by Jamie Hartrich.
The seventh grade computer/technology curriculum focuses on expanding and building upon computer/technology terminology and age-appropriate software.
Seventh graders build upon their keyboarding accuracy and speed and will type 20-30 words per minute with 90% accuracy.
Seventh graders will create more advanced word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations from previously learned concepts.
Seventh graders will be introduced to HTML and how to use Netscape Composer and HTML to create a web page.
Photo editing software will be introduced to the seventh graders and they will learn basic photo editing concepts and how to manipulate or edit a picture.
Desktop Publishing will also be introduced to seventh graders. They will learn basic desktop publishing concepts and learn how to create newsletters, flyers, and brochures.
Basic banking skills will be introduced. Seventh graders will learn about starting a checking account, writting checks, depositing money, withdrawling money, and balancing a checkbook.
