Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K)
St. Mary's Pre-K class is taught by Mary Current.
Please review how the following topics have been prepared for the Pre-K school year.
RELIGION
The Pre-Kindergarten religion curriculum is a two-part program.
The three year old class is introduced to Bible heroes from the Old and New Testament. Through simple crafts, games, puzzles, and activities students begin to understand that the Bible heroes were real people who did real things for God.
The four-year-old class uses Gospel Weeklies called Seeds , which follows readings and activities through the Catholic year.
Basic religious holiday concepts are introduced to the students. Students are also taught basic prayers.

LITERACY
Literacy in these years starts the development of reading and writing.
Through literacy a student will learn comprehension of words and reading strategies. The student will also learn to make predictions and retell stories.
Early literacy will help the child understand the conventions and functions of print. Goals of early literacy are to aid in the development of oral language, to enhance book awareness, to promote different types of literature, and to foster an awareness of the connections between the spoken word and the written word.

MATHEMATICS
At the Pre-Kindergarten level, mathematics are taught using manipulatives and through the use of art, music, and play.
Math goals at this level are to encourage the use of mathematical concepts, to aid in the development of representational thought, to encourage the use of patterns, to promote measurement, and to encourage the use of reasoning skills.
Other skills introduced are rationale counting, one to one correspondence, sorting, classifying, sequencing, and size and shape awareness.

PLAY
Play carries out an extremely important role in the student's learning and development.
During play the student will learn communication, listening, awareness of change, social roles, risk taking, empathy, cooperation and respect for others.
St. Mary's Pre-Kindergarten program incorporates centers which allows for play based learning.

SCIENCE
Science at the Pre-Kindergarten level is used to encourage natural curiosity and the use of reasoning skills.
Science is hands on and allows the students to try new experiments. Skills taught in science are: properties, change, textures, measurement, cause and effect, classifying, collecting, observing and problem solving.
These skills will be taught and reinforced with the following subjects: Senses, weather, germs, foods, safety, parts of body, water, animals and more.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Social Sciences at this level is taught to help students learn social and cognitive aspects of the world around them.
Socially the student will learn such concepts as cooperation, negotiation, and diversity through traditions and celebrations.
Cognitively the student will be introduced to graphing, maps, globes, and gathering information.

ART
Art is a chance for the students to use their fine motor skills. This is done through gluing, finger painting, cutting, and much more.
Art enhances the student's eye-hand coordination and allows the student to develop self expression. Art is used to reinforce the cognitive skills taught in math, science, social science, and literacy.
Other goals of art are: enhancing creativity, raising self-esteem, and building sensory awareness.

MUSIC
St. Mary's Music is taught by April Myers.
Furthering the development of the student's physical, emotional, social, and cognitive areas is the reason for teaching music at this level.
Through music, a student is taught expressive, thinking, and descriptive skills.
Music helps in the development of coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and spatial awareness. Music is used to aid in the developing an awareness of different tempos, rhythms and sounds.
Literacy, science, social science, and math are reinforced with the use of music.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
During this important time of development physical education allows students to use their fine and gross motor skills. This is done through running, jumping, skipping, playing catch, bouncing and catching a ball, kicking a ball and much more.
Physical education also aids in the development of physical skills such as eye hand coordination, body coordination and spatial awareness.
